Imagine beautiful homes perched on the
hilly, wooded shore of Mill Creek. Old Millstone Landing, a small
enclave of only 28 homes, hints of times gone by, when life was much
simpler than it is today.
The sun kissed waters of this tidal
creek glisten as gentle breezes nudge the marsh grasses into a friendly
wave. A salty tang and bird songs fills the air, summoning you to your
porch, pier or boat for a little quality time. Pickup your fishing pole,
butterfly net, bird watching gear or crab pots, the time is yours to
enjoy.
Old Millstone Landing is part of the
Sneads Ferry community, a quaint coastal fishing village. The ocean is
but a short boat ride down Mill Creek into Alligator Bay and then North
up the Intracoastal Waterway to New River Inlet or South to Topsail
inlet. Great fishing and marine sports are all nearby.
Old Millstone Landing invites you to
take life at a more leisurely pace. Enjoy the history, festivals,
weather and nature that make this area so special.
Old Millstone Landing is built on long
ago Algonquian Indian hunting grounds. The crossing of Old Folkstone
Road and Mill Creek also served the area as a grist mill with a dam in
lieu of the bridge. The Everett family, with roots dating back to the
1700's built and operate the mill into the late 1800's when the miller's
home was converted into a rollicking tavern and dance hall serving both
locals, the marines from Camp Lejeune and Camp Davis GI’s.
Coastal Onslow County, Sneads Ferry and
Stump Sound Township particularly are enjoying new found prosperity as
more and more baby boomers are seeking to retire to the natural beauty
of the temperate North Carolina coast.
Factors driving the economy along with
retirees, include beach vacationing families heading to Topsail Island
only 3 miles away and an influx of permanent military facilities such as
the Marine Corp. Rapid Response Brigade, The Homeland Security Force,
and the Coast Guard Training Base for Homeland Security. These all have
a stabilizing effect on the economy by reducing recessions.
New residents are amazed that taxes are
low and that reasonable home prices still exist. Mimosa Bay is another
new community in the area.
